The perfect title to kick off the school year!

I’m going to try to continue posting something every two months. After 23 years of tinkering with the site, I’ve only just found my update rhythm. We’ll see how long this bold resolution lasts… Second resolution: learn how to use a spell checker. I was motivated enough to fix the typography on hundreds of pages, powered by ŗ̴̰̎e̴̱͐͊g̶̛͍̃̀u̴̮͑l̷̢̐̀̾̑a̴̻̋̍͊r̵̘̣̘̉͛̀̚͜ ̴͕̬̘̋͊̊̓ȅ̸̲̋ͅẍ̵͕̘̳̈́p̸̦̪̞̭̎̚͠r̸̳̫̈́̈́͛͝ë̶̝̮s̴̖͎͔̓͗s̵̝̯̎̿̈́̌ï̸̧̡̮̣ő̸̤͇͖̉̇̚ṋ̷̓.̵̧͂̊͘͝ This may have caused a few layout glitches, which I encourage you to let me know about. And any typo spotting is also appreciated!

May 22, 2022:

During my painful overhaul to bring the site up to standards (HTML 5), I took the opportunity to tweak the layout by adding a fourth slot for displaying screenshots. Just a quick copy-paste job on some 900 pages (the only function I’ve truly mastered).

What I had slightly underestimated was the time required to gather all those images: launching 900 games (in an Amiga emulator, averaging three or four tries each), then getting far enough because this was for the fourth screenshot, and we already had shots from levels 1 and 2.

So, I slogged through every single one in alphabetical order! It took me two years, with a months-long hiatus around the “F” section. An indescribable sense of despair set in as I waded through endless flight simulators…

All this to let you know that there are now four images instead of three. And the first person to grumble about the update frequency (or “helpfully” suggest adding a fifth)—I’ll put them in a frame and hang them up myself!

November 20, 2021:

Mega Man X Command Mission

It’s time to update the Mega Man section! I’ve heard a new one came out … fifteen years ago. Wait, how old does that make me?

Mega Man Maverick Hunter X (PSP, 2006)

Lichdom: Battlemage

July 27, 2020:

Following Mr. Adobe Flash©’s default block by Mr. Google Chrome, I’m announcing the site’s conversion to HTML 5.0!

To be honest, I didn’t even know HTML 2 existed. You can’t imagine how much I struggled to catch up on twenty years of “progress”. I spent half a day relearning how to adjust text size, for example.

<font size=12>

That was before. It was simple, it was accessible, so of course, it had to be reformed!
Anyway, like Beatrix Kiddo, staring with determination at her big toe, I slowly regained my esteemed faculties…
Who am I kidding?

June 22, 2020:

Amiga:

Hägar
Halley Project, The
Hammer Boy
Hard Drivin’
Hard ‘n’ Heavy
Harley Davidson
H.A.T.E.

Hero Quest 2
Hero’s Quest
Historyline 1914-1918
Hoi
Hook
Horror Zombies from the Crypt
Hotshot
Human Killing Machine
Hydra
Hydrocis

And since we’re not afraid of heated controversies, I’ve revised my grading scale to spread the scores out more. There were too many 7s and 8s for my liking. So, you might notice that your favorite game ended up with a 5 or a 6, and you might complain about it, but I’ll remind you that I passed my high school exams with less than that!

Never mind, it’s done: Subnautica (PC, 2018).

December 31, 2019:

Clearing out old dead links. A-wimoweh, a-wimoeh! (Look out, the links are asleep!)

December 22, 2019:

Always on the cutting edge of current events—and progress—I just realised there’s a new Amiga emulator! New since 2011, it seems… Hey, look at me jumping nine years into the future! Or, well, into the present, really.

In any case, I’m absolutely amazed. Not because this emulator works better than the old one. I could handle WinUAE just fine. What I couldn’t do, however, was explain how. That made it incredibly difficult to evangelize to my friends, as I was utterly incapable of getting an Amiga game running under their smug eyes in less than two hours, fifteen attempts, and just as many clever configurations.

FS-UAE is the user-friendly tool we’ve all been waiting for, designed for the average Joe (yours truly!) who’s a bit nostalgic and tempted to play some Pang, but definitely not ready to spend the evening pulling their hair out over settings pages. And this ease of use is exactly what I was missing to motivate me to update my tutorial on Amiga emulation, hastily scribbled over fifteen years ago. Done!

On a more dramatic note, you may have noticed some ugly gray (or white) squares on certain pages of the site (actually, all of them). This is the latest sign of the slow death of Macromedia/Adobe Flash, whose plugin is now blocked by default in most major browsers. Annoying. It was the one “web technology” I actually touched, and now it’s set to disappear by the end of 2020. Oh well! I’ll probably wait until the last moment to do something about it, and it’ll probably be a site makeover … with scissors. Rest assured, I won’t let anyone touch Javascript or Comic Sans!

For those who might have missed the major sporting event of this July, the Paris Championship took place from the 14th to the 21st, at the Pierre de Coubertin stadium.

January 3, 2018:

The little “games of the moment” box on the homepage will be updated more regularly in the future. So, rest assured, Mr. Javascript will take care of that with every page load!

New tracks have been added to the jukebox (Turrican 2, among others). Dusting off the links section. A few corrections here and there.

July 30, 2017:

A belated thank you to Steffest for the polish added to Dazeldash, and an even more belated thank you to Gaël for this translation of Castle Quest on NES.

And a happy new year to everyone while I’m at it!

On the occasion of this … first update of the year? Oh, really? Well, I’m featuring a PC game that’s a bit too niche: Infinifactory.

While waiting for the next update, and since I’m sure I’ll miss Christmas, I’ve continued to scatter (clickable!) around the Amiga section. Go ahead and find them! If you understand English, I suggest starting with the Thundercats page (awesome video).

By the way, I would be very grateful if visitors could point out any broken links.

August 18, 2014:

Numerous little presentation adjustments across all pages of the site. My HTML tables have finally fallen in line. Hallelujah!

July 28, 2014:

I noticed that in a recent update, Firefox changed how it interprets line spacing. For a ’90s-style site full of HTML tables, this wreaks havoc on the layout … which will take me a while to fix. So if you spot any oddities, blame it on progress. Tell it to knock it off. If you’re using another browser, and the site was optimized for Firefox, chin up: it’s already been a mess for ages!

And since we’re clearly not here for fun, here are 58 Amiga games:

February 1, 2014:

More tiny layout changes. Barely anything. Oh, look, the Music section is back, I had some regrets about that.

January 8, 2014:

I’ve been meaning to add the music from Cannon Fodder to the jukebox for some time, and now it’s done, along with Kult, Obliterator, and Unreal. A few layout changes, the “Music” section and partner sites have been removed, the “Links” section has been severely pruned, and the pages on Mega Man should no longer make some people’s eyes bleed. Promise, I’ll stop with the animated backgrounds.
However, this week I reinstalled Flash! The 2004 version, since I couldn’t make heads or tails of the newer one … so if you see critters running around, don’t be alarmed…

Three games shamefully left aside even though they’ve been on my list since the creation of the site:

Unreal

So on the page for Thundercats, we’ve had Tetris instead of the title … for at least five years…
By the way, the bearded ones have gathered and decided that “graphismes” should be plural, that “platesforme” would remain a single word, and that “jeu de shoot” would now be written as “jeu de tir”. This is France, people, good ol’ France! Everyone okay with this? I’m okay. Adopted!
Mass copy-pasting is so much fun.

Yolanda

August 20, 2010:

Added Supaplex and Super Stardust.

August 14, 2010:

Revised the English version of the entire “Mega Man” section. I’m just a little less embarrassed now.

August 13, 2010:

I have a serious addiction to JavaScript…
From now on, the site’s background will change colour depending on the season and time of day! Sorry about that.
Loads of new links. So many that I had to add a 7th section.
I’ve finally given in to the trend of link exchanges on the front page. Just in case it brings some visitors here, you know!

August 9, 2010:

A few more links scattered around and three mini-reviews in the “PC and consoles” section:

Blood Omen
Bushido Blade
Panzer Dragoon Saga

August 6, 2010:

I thought I could “spread some pages” on Boulder Dash, but there were only six lines about a poor version that wasn’t even faithful. Injustice corrected with a revision of the page on Boulderdash C64 and the addition of Boulder Dash Collection 2 (Amiga).
A little something on Super Mario World 2: Yoshi’s Island (PC and consoles).

August 4, 2010:

Two Amiga games added:

Bloodwych
Treasure Island Dizzy

Oh yes, Dazeland celebrated its tenth anniversary two months ago.

August 2, 2010:

I just discovered there are other screen resolutions beyond 1024x768. Beautiful, right? Oh wait, it’s all ugly…
Layout changes for ultra-high resolutions (I’ve only tested up to 1280x1024, we’re old school, or we’re not, okay?).
Various corrections… Have fun searching for them. That’s it.

March 29, 2010:

Megaman Skin: small adjustments. Mario nerf!
Replaced the MIDI music that was causing quite a few problems with mp3 files.
Lemmings Skin: same, music in mp3 format.

March 15, 2010:

Added two remixes of Doom in the jukebox and replaced the music from Star Fox with a longer version.

Three Amiga games:

H2G2
Mr. Nutz
Zork

Links, links, and more links.
And the jukebox doesn’t work anymore, I don’t know why.

March 6, 2010:

A good sweep through the links and a few spelling corrections.
Événement!

March 1, 2010:

And here’s The Bard’s Tale.

February 7, 2010:

Jukebox is up.
Links to remakes or fan sites have been added to the bottom of some Amiga game pages (Marble Madness, Boulder Dash, Xenon, and many more).

February 7, 2010:

Big site overhaul coming soon. Still old school, still Boulder Dash, still brown, but brown in a better way!
Changing hosts right away.
Added a little jukebox, which doesn’t work for now…

January 17, 2010:

Changed the background and added a new section in “Miscellaneous”: Geek Books!

January 9, 2010:

Complete English version. It’s just Google Translate, more or less corrected, but you can more or less understand it!
Recolored the Game Boy screenshots in green.
Mini-icons that change with each section. Wow!

December 28, 2009:

Added Mega Man Zero 2 (Mega Man) and Garrison II (Amiga).

December 19, 2009:

Added two Amiga games:

Baal
Exile

There you go, and it’s been ten years since I’ve been babbling about Megaman, and not one person has come to tell me it’s written in two words. I’ve just added about 200 spaces and as many capital M’s. A big day, I tell you!

December 13, 2009:

A small page about the game Castle Quest that you’ll find in the “PC and consoles” section.
Updated the links page and the “Music” section with links, more links.

October 24, 2009:

Switched to winter colours.
Made small adjustments so that the site looks the same on both Explorer and Firefox. The background is now fixed on both, but I couldn’t colour the scrollbar in Firefox. I think that’s the last difference between the two.

October 11, 2009:

Firefox users can now hear music in the Flash interfaces for Lemmings and Megaman!
Some animated gifs were spinning too fast on Firefox, that’s been fixed.
Added crosshairs to the small intro on the homepage. Absolutely necessary!

January 30, 2009:

Layout, spelling, a clarification in the Megaman interface scores (the Flash thing), and three new links.

January 20, 2009:

Three more crappy games, I apologize, but it’s faster that way.

Castlevania
Kastle Kumquat
Teenage Mutant Hero Turtles: The Coin-Op!

And a mini-guide on how to use an arcade emulator (in the “Amiga” section, at the very bottom).

January 18, 2009:

Three new illustrious Amiga games, or should I say, indispensable ones. I present:

Advanced Lawnmower Simulator
Equality
Zool 2

Two music section links for you to discover (something Doom related).

September 20, 2008:

Three Amiga games:

Beneath a Steal Sky
Benefactor
Zool

The game entries will be a bit more detailed. I will differentiate the publisher from the developer, indicate the number of players (simultaneous or alternate), and replace the term “playability” with several parameters: difficulty, longevity, and a small, totally unbiased rating out of 10.

January 27, 2008:

Digging up old fossils:

Act Out
Amegas
Mortville Manor
Mousetrap
Rody et Mastico

… And a few dead links eradicated.

January 24, 2008:

Added Megaman Legends 2 and Battle and Chase.

October 28, 2007:

Dazeland switches to winter colours.
Page layout change: goodbye to the “frame”.

October 13, 2007:

Added Megaman Legends!
Plus a dozen new links.

September 2, 2007:

Ten Amiga games added:

Clever & Smart
Crazy Cars
Flight of the Amazon Queen
Flight Simulator II
Gear Works
Hired Guns
Indianapolis 500
Klax
Llamatron
Syndicate

The three little TI calculator games were accidentally erased. It took me 2-3 years to notice, so … here they are again, in the “Misc.” section.

August 28, 2006:

Have you ever been fleeced by a clever salesman? That’s kind of the impression I got after leaving the “Amiga Fantasy” site with two boxes of old Amiga games, all with dubious names but all rated better than the others… You could say he’s good at selling them.
I saw some terrifying things … a red and yellow chicken limping, a brick breaker with four paddles, a blue coyote playing the piano, another brick breaker with thirty balls, a hockey game with tanks, a clown who thinks he’s Pac Man…
And all these oldies, I’m going to share them with you… Hey! Stay right there!

Alfred Chicken
Clown-o-Mania
Fire and Ice
Gotcha
Krypton Egg
Projectyle
Soccer Kid
Spherical
Super Obliteration
Sword of Sodan
Tecno Ball

July 1, 2005:

There are moments when I feel the need to barricade myself at home for a week, stop seeing anyone, and completely overhaul the site. A sort of masochistic urge…
The last time this hit me, I was quietly putting the finishing touches on my new Flash interface: a mini-game with Megaman and other NES mascots, complete with lots of beeps, moving buttons, and flashing lights. A real disco, I was happy.
Then at the end, when I tried to load the site, with about 200 pages of text and images, for some unknown reason, it went slower. Much slower. An abominable lag! I watched Megaman struggle in slow-motion like The Matrix, with a chunk of text in the foreground that wasn’t doing so well either.
Anyway, the point is, some things had to change. Forget about the “all in Flash” thing and redo pages to be light and navigable in good old HTML. While I was at it, I redesigned everything.

7 September 2004:

Updated the archive containing all the Amiga modules, with a manual for beginners (at the bottom of the “Music” section).
Added a few instructions at the beginning of the Amiga section about emulation.
A fifth category for sorting links: “General ROM Sites”.
Some spelling mistakes fixed, plus a bug in the Lemmings Skin.
I’ll be settling in Dublin for a while. So, normally, no updates until May.

25 August 2004:

16 Amiga games:

Arkanoid
Black Crypt
Cannon Fodder
Crack
Cruncher Factory
Diamonds
Dugger
Dune 2
Lotus Esprit Turbo Challenge
Mike the Magic Dragon
Mission Elevator
Pinball Magic
Spidertronic
Spy Who Loved Me
Vampire’s Empire
Xenon 2

5 June 2004:

On the agenda today, about fifteen Amiga games:

ADS
Bucktooth Bob
Castles
Diablo
Faery Tale
Fire Power
Flip-Flop
Kick Off
Powerplay
Road Wars
Silent Service
Simon The Sorcerer
Stardust
Test Drive

February 22, 2003:

Until the next account shutdown, Amiga games are once again available for download. Enjoy it while it lasts, I’m not up for re-uploading everything every month.

September 7, 2002:

Added Wily Wars on Sega Genesis and some corrections to the “Megaman” section.

July 28, 2002:

New additions in the Amiga section:

Flashback
Overlander
Over the Net
Persian Gulf Inferno
Project X
Rainbow Island

July 26, 2002:

A small update, Dazeland has just turned two. This month, a new Unreal Tournament map from Smash TV and a new forum.

June 1, 2002:

New quiz (still very late), removal of the “Animated Gifs” section in favor of an “FAQ”, updated texts and emulators.

April 14, 2002:

New quiz (late), added three Amiga games (Shadow of the Beast, Pushover, The Real Ghostbusters) and fixed links.

January 19, 2002:

Added four Amiga games (it had been a while), some mp3s, and a few corrections here and there.

January 9, 2002:

“Megaman” section updated with Megaman Xtrem, Megaman Xtrem 2, and a few new sprites.

December 17, 2001:

Dazeldash finished! Download it from the “Games” or “Boulderdash” sections. Another old project is now completed: the walkthrough for Blood Omen: Legacy of Kain! Now just to fix the typos…

November 17, 2001:

As usual, a new quiz this month, a few fixed links, and I’ve reduced the 50 backgrounds to just one for all pages. Coming soon: more additions to the “Megaman” section, new animated gifs, mp3s, and Dazeldash will be finished for those I promised it to six months ago.

September 28, 2001:

Babeloueb is dead, I’ve moved all the ROMs to a different host. Hopefully, they’ll stay up longer than three days this time…

September 22, 2001:

Still issues with hosting and account closures. There will probably be some broken links while I re-upload parts of the site…
On the bright side, the latest version of WinUAE perfectly emulates Menace! I’ll upload it in a few days.

September 1, 2001:

New month, new quiz!

August 12, 2001:

I got an email from Babeloueb: “Sorry, I’ve shut down the sites that were flagged as illegal. I’m reopening your account until further notice. Do some housekeeping on the Nintendo section, and I’ll talk to Seb about the Amiga section.” Housekeeping done, no more Nintendo ROMs on my Babeloueb account. I hope they’ll still tolerate Amiga emulation, otherwise I’ll have to change hosts and Dazeland will be down for a few more days…

August 8, 2001:

Babeloueb just closed all its emulation sites, including Dazeland!
The links will be fixed once I find a new host for my ROMs. The “Consoles” section is now abandoned…

August 1, 2001:

Here are some more lesser-known Amiga games: Detonator, Leaderboard Golf, Little Computer People, Phalanx, Power Styx. Two new links and a little quiz has appeared at the top of the page!

July 30, 2001:

A few more Amiga games added.

July 24, 2001:

Big update to the “Music” section: added Battle Squadron and Hybris, two of the most beautiful Amiga modules! New version of Shining (the RPG by Synbios) and Dazeland celebrates its first anniversary!

June 29, 2001:

Fixed a link to Megaman 6 and added a “memory” in Javascript themed around Megaman 7! I also added the ROM while I was at it…

June 25, 2001:

A new puzzle in the “Lousy Games” section from Moonstone, a small update in the “Music” section, and soon a fifth digit will appear on the counter!

June 9, 2001:

Good news: a new, faster forum!
Bad news: my host “kindly” asked me to put their ads on every page, and I’ve reluctantly complied.

May 25, 2001:

Five Amiga games, one NES, and one Super Nintendo added; the “Megaman” section updated, and the “Polls” page has disappeared.

March 27, 2001:

Huge update to the Amiga section: 23 ROMs added!

March 19, 2001:

The beginning of the solution for Blood Omen: Legacy of Kain is online here! Not much yet, but I’ll add a bit every week… And two new NES ROMs: Galaga and Gauntlet!

March 8, 2001:

Two NES ROMs, the “Humour” and “Links” pages slightly modified.

March 6, 2001:

A few more ROMs, this time for NES and Super Nintendo.

February 26, 2001:

One more Amiga game: Geebee Air Rally and a few additions to the “Music” section.

Chez.com
(I couldn’t find any older news. Lost to posterity!)
[Translating all this has been a harrowing experience. – Ed.]
