One of the most popular flight sims of its time, aiming to strike a balance between realism and accessibility. You could fly an F/A-18 Hornet or an F-16 Falcon and take part in a few spectacular missions over San Francisco Bay…

Sure, the early 3D graphics haven’t aged gracefully, but this title remains a classic in my book for being so easy to pick up and well put together. The zoom effects are still impressive, as are the various camera angles you can switch between at will. Perfect for creating some rather fancy clips.

Beyond a few intense moments during aerial dogfights, nerve-wracking landing drills, or the tragicomedy of an overly ambitious looping attempt … what I loved most was the sheer sense of freedom above the city (a bit flat, granted). Who hasn’t messed around under the Golden Gate Bridge, preferably upside down at full throttle? I left bits of fuselage scattered all over. Apparently, you can even attack Electronic Arts’ headquarters—which might pique the interest of modern gamers

Personally, I was too young to appreciate this game back in 1988. I made up for it a few years later with Ace Combat 2 on the PlayStation, and, well, let’s just say my expertise in flight sims doesn’t extend much beyond that…
