An unofficial adaptation of POD: Proof of Destruction (Commodore 64, 1986), itself inspired by the classic Centipede (arcade, 1981).
You control a drone tethered to a grid, armed with a rapid-fire cannon that can only shoot upwards. Enemies approach from all directions. The goal isn’t so much to destroy them as it is to survive until the countdown – displayed at the top of the screen – reaches zero. Destroyed enemies explode, temporarily obliterating a small section of the grid and limiting your movement.
For something simple and straightforward, it works well. Personally, I get bored quickly.
Another famous Centipede clone is Gridrunner (VIC-20, 1982), which saw a remake in 2010: Gridrunner Revolution.
