Called Overlord in the United States, this space strategy title is very much like Millenium 2.2, with one notable difference: real time gameplay, which significantly increases the stress level!

Your task is to annihilate one of the four rival alien races, represented by their respective leaders, which you select at the start of the game depending on the level of opposition you want—ranging from a brainless ape to the embodiment of pure evil: a cross between Darth Vader and a villain from Dragon Ball Z (the type who’s not exactly friendly).

To achieve your goal, you must build a galactic empire by colonising new planets; organising the collection and repatriation of resources, tax levies, and, of course, building a military force to pay a “friendly” visit to your xenomorphic neighbours. The campaign is punctuated by unexpected events such as catastrophes or scientific discoveries (often linked), which sometimes require an appropriate response from you.

I find the interface cluttered and overloaded, while the number of options is actually quite limited. Once you understand the principle, it’s not difficult to defeat any opponent by following the same method. The only constraint is doing things in the right order and quickly (and not watching TV at the same time—that’s the downside of real time).

Despite the highly repetitive nature and somewhat abstract presentation of this type of game (hello, spreadsheets), it still has a mysterious addictive power; at least, until you finish two games…
