For those wondering, yes, they’ve made something even more childish than Wonderboy.

It looks so amateurish, this game; that undoubtedly contributes to its charm. It features a cheeky little wizard who above all loves crushing hedgehogs under wooden crates. We await the sequel impatiently to move on to petrol cans and matches.

Beneath its modest exterior, this title nonetheless endorses all the genre’s conventions: plenty of colourful things, secret passages, merchants selling dubious utensils, fruits, mushrooms, spiders … and cramped controls, particularly for using the multitude of objects.

Best reserved for young children, to whom the profusion of marshmallow sweetness will appeal, as will the mistreatment of small animals.

And meanwhile, console players were enjoying Disney’s Chip & Dale: Rescue Rangers (NES, 1990)…
