A pale port of an arcade legend.
Strider, released by Capcom in 1989, features a manga-inspired character—a kind of futuristic ninja, armed with a sword and capable of scaling walls using a hook. He’s up against a demonic dictator and his army of … bad guys. Yeah, who cares.
Its innovative style (ultra-fast close combat, acrobatic manoeuvring, environmental interactions) influenced a number of action/platform games, including Mega Man X, earning it a well-deserved spot on the site.
Of course, I would’ve preferred a higher-quality port on Amiga. The developers made the choice to cut entire sections of the game (including the final duel), and despite that, it remains painfully slow to play. The Sega Genesis version fares better, but I encourage you to experience it on an arcade emulator.
To console you, a remake came out in 2014, and Dead Cells (2018).
