Originally, this was an advertising game designed to promote the soda brand 7up, featuring one of its mascots: a red dot wearing sunglasses. It was, in fact, its second appearance in a game, following Spot (1990), a variant of Othello.

In Europe, Fido Dido is more better known, which doesn’t explain why references to the sugary drink were removed from the European version of Cool Spot. Was it really necessary?

With or without the advertisement, the little cartoon character exuding a cool attitude proves well-suited for a platform game that, while generic, is nonetheless executed with care. I see it as a precursor to Rayman. However, the conversion of Cool Spot from Sega Genesis to Amiga wasn’t without its downsides: loss of colours, slower frame rate, and an overall “unfinished” feel. I’d recommend the console version instead.

A 3D isometric sequel followed: Spot Goes To Hollywood (Sega Genesis, 1995), which was then adapted for PlayStation and Saturn in 1997.

For modern players, if you enjoy Cool Spot, you’ll love Cuphead (2017)!
