This is the first text adventure game developed by the English studio Magnetic Scrolls (initially for the old Sinclair QL computer, then on the Atari ST, Amiga, and other systems of the era). They specialised in this genre, reusing the same interface across several games (including Fish!).

You play as a bloke who’s mugged one evening in the street and wakes up in a fantasy world with a silver bracelet on his arm. You’re on a gravel path leading north towards two snow-capped mountains. To the west lies a dying forest. To the east, a vast grassy plain (in five letters)…

A few illustrations are included (static images you can view by dragging the screen down while holding the right mouse button), but this still doesn’t qualify as a graphical adventure game. All the essential elements—descriptions, dialogues, item inventory, actions—are delivered through reams and reams of text … in English.

That said, the built-in speech synthesiser can read it all out for you.

No? You’re sure?
