I’m not a Mario fan. True, his games are of high quality, with highly refined level design, exemplary controls, secret passages everywhere… I’m thinking of Super Mario Land 2 on Game Boy in particular, which was very well done. But there you have it, I suppose his face just doesn’t sit right with me. Mind you, he hasn’t stopped showing it to us for fifteen twenty thirty years. My god, time flies!
So for me, the ideal would be a Mario game without Mario. What a coincidence! As it happens, the main character of this Super Mario World 2 is Yoshi, the little dinosaur…
I won’t go on about the story and gameplay—it’s an absolutely perfect platformer in every respect, as we’ve come to expect from Nintendo, which, moreover, managed to reinvent itself compared to the previous instalment. Perfection breeds indifference, doesn’t it?
No, what makes this game memorable, actually, is its graphics. I could talk about 3D effects, animation, Super FX 2, but no. I simply love this pastel crayon-scribbled style and those oversized bosses. Love it or hate it, you’ve got to admit it’s devilishly creative! Among the mass of very good platformers that came out on Super Nintendo, particularly towards the end, this is the one that stuck in my mind.
