For those unfamiliar, Panzer Dragoon was originally a shooting game released on Saturn in 1995, in which you rode a dragon through dreamlike landscapes. Despite rather repetitive gameplay (shooting at everything that moves), it stood out for its grandiose scenery and music. The long opening cutscene was also memorable. A sequel was released the following year, Panzer Dragoon Zwei, again on Saturn, still a shooting game, but graphically more advanced.
The series reached its pinnacle with its third instalment: Panzer Dragoon Saga, which kept the same universe but radically changed the gameplay system. It became a proper role-playing game with long exploration phases interspersed with random turn-based battles. The game spanned four CDs, which was very rare for the time. Computer-generated sequences were omnipresent and the music remained sublime.
When objectively compared to other role-playing games, one might find fault, particularly with the technical aspects of combat or the lack of equipment variety. The exploration phases can also be a bit tedious at times… No matter! What one remembers is its unique atmosphere. The ambition of a good role-playing game is to make you forget all others. For me, it succeeded!
