Also known as AH-3 ThunderStrike in the US, this helicopter combat simulator turns its back on realism in favor of immediate action.

You complete various missions across the world (some at night). These are introduced through animated briefings and numerous dialogue scenes. This scripting creates a pleasant atmosphere, supported by high-quality illustrations. Too bad the core of the game (in 3D) doesn’t receive the same attention. Still, the execution impresses with its speed—that’s the main appeal.

While using the mouse takes some getting used to (they hadn’t quite figured out the mouse/keyboard combo back then!), the small number of controls makes the task relatively simple (if needed, you can reduce the mouse sensitivity).
By the way: to take off, hold the right button and pull up the stick.

This game was adapted for the Sega Mega-CD in 1993. A big success, greatly enhanced visually, and benefiting from controller support. Undoubtedly one of the best titles on that console.

Two sequels followed: Firestorm: Thunderhawk 2 (PlayStation, 1995) and Thunderhawk: Operation Phoenix (PlayStation 2, 2001).
