A contemporary wargame set against the backdrop of the Cold War, relatively simple if you take the time to read the manual, and quite well-presented. It’s the adaptation of a title released in 1985 on the Commodore 64: Theatre Europe.
World War III has broken out, and you’ve been entrusted with leading the armies. Which armies, you ask? That’s entirely up to you. Choose the Allied side and halt the advance of the Red Army, or on the other hand, work for the Russians, outflank NATO forces, and invade West Germany or France.
Different scenarios will teach you the basics of modern warfare: air superiority, ground battles, chemical or nuclear strikes… All symbolically, of course. The game screen only shows little flashing squares on a map of Europe, accompanied by a few situation reports. There’s also a small dose of diplomacy, but don’t hold out too much hope for that aspect!
In any case, the goal of the game is to defeat your opponent while minimising human losses, so if possible, avoiding the use of nuclear weapons. The introduction sets an atmosphere of world-ending anxiety. But without a two-player mode, you quickly get the feeling you’re just doing the same thing over and over again.
