Also known as Go for Gold, this is one of the classics of the genre on the Commodore 64, developed by Epyx, the specialist in sports challenge games in the ’80s.
Here’s a recap of the main titles in the “collection”. They were all adapted for the Amiga a few years later, but I would always recommend the original versions on a Commodore 64 emulator:
- 1984 – Summer Games (summer olympics)
- 1985 – Summer Games 2 (new events like fencing and javelin throwing)
- 1985 – Winter Games (winter sports)
- 1986 – World Games (less conventional events!)
- 1987 – California Games (Skate, BMX, Surf…)
- 1988 – Games: The Summer Edition
- 1988 – Games: The Winter Edition
Note that California Games 2 was released in 1990 on PC and in 1992 on Amiga.
It’s pretty much the same thing: mini-games requiring skill or speed (or joystick waggling), mainly for multiplayer, to challenge your friends over pizza at night. The events are quite varied and sometimes funny, especially when you mess up (like throwing the shot put into the camera, or the time I accidentally hit a bird with the archery shot).
This one takes place in Seoul during the 1988 summer olympics. It includes eight events: archery, cycling, gymnastics (uneven bars and rings), shot put, pole vault, hurdles, and diving. The only downside: the loading times and constant disk swaps that can get a bit annoying.
On WinUAE: set to “Amiga 1000” with kickstart 1.3. Be warned, it doesn’t like savestates!
