An adaptation of a famous American comic strip from the ’70s and ’80s, Hägar the Horrible (Hägar Dünor in its French version), chronicling the adventures of a scruffy, beer-loving Viking torn between raids, tavern brawls, and his chaotic family life.

Naturally, the game focuses on the first of these pursuits in a platformer you might fairly describe as “primitive”. Your wife has given you a list of souvenirs to bring back from your “travels” across neighboring lands.

Hägar dispatches enemies with sword swings (of laughable reach), though you can “charge” an attack by holding down the button. Throwable weapons are also available via the function keys (“F6” to “F10”), while “F5” lets you regain some health by munching on supplies. The money you collect can be spent on restocking at the local shop—or downing a pint at the tavern.

Despite its charm, the game is let down by incredibly flat level design, dodgy hit detection, and those infuriating “leaps of faith” that see you jumping blindly off platforms into who-knows-what lethal hazards below.

Oh, and the pièce de résistance: your health bar depletes constantly, forcing you to rush through the levels. What a brilliant idea…
