We’ve come a long way in terms of 3D, huh!
This one is a pioneer, among others, like Driller (1987), as it uses an innovative 3D engine called Freescape, based on interactions with “solid” 3D objects made of full-surface polygons.
Even though several similar games had existed on 8-bit computers for a few years, Castle Master represents, for me, the era of early experiences in exploring virtual 3D worlds, offering both a certain realism and great freedom of movement in first-person view (the “camera” can be rotated 360 degrees).
This engine would later be adopted and popularised by the 3D Construction Kit (1991), a tool aimed at amateurs to easily create their own 3D games (in theory!).
Of course, today, these 3D dinosaurs seem rather austere, and above all, painfully slow. I doubt contemporary audiences would find much entertainment in them.
