For many, Kick Off was a revolution in terms of gameplay. The controls are very straightforward: a single button for dribbling, passing, shooting, tackling, or heading. Most importantly, the ball doesn’t “stick” to the players, unlike in most football simulations.
Kick Off demands a fair bit of practice before you can even hope to control the ball—which probably explains why I can’t keep hold of it for more than five seconds. To be honest, the only thing I can consistently manage is kicking the ball straight into touch.
It’s worth noting that it’s now quite unusual for a football game to use a top-down view and display the pitch vertically.
