I got interested in this game for two reasons: its title and its title screen (with mutant rats). It was all the rage in the ’90s—anthropomorphic animal characters with an attitude (Battletoads).
And once again, I found myself driving a ball through a maze… Thanks, marketing. Something tells me the rat imagery wasn’t originally part of the deal.
Balls in mazes … another ’90s craze on the Amiga. It was the zero point of creativity, the equivalent of today’s Rogue-likes.
You know the drill—the goal is to destroy stuff to raise barriers, then collect more stuff, and get out.
There’s a shop where you can buy weapons and other fun gadgets for your fiery little rodents. I didn’t get the point of sharing resources between the three characters, especially since you only control one at a time. The coolant represents your armour level (it reduces damage). If you’re low on energy or ammo, go back to the level entrance or access some terminals to restock. By the way, press “Space” to use the secondary weapon and “Enter” to launch a bomb.
For once, there’s no time limit (at least, no countdown), but the painfully limited resources and the constant arrival of new enemies force you to play quickly. Paradoxically, I find the zoom level too high to dodge shots, which makes you move around blindly. A slow pace can work if it’s paired with a tense atmosphere (Alien Breed). Here, though, it’s just generic and boring as hell. Or as a dead rat…
If you want to quench your insatiable thirst for cheeky little rats, I suggest you move to the Paris area or get your hands on Reservoir Rat (Game Boy, 1998).
Otherwise, you’ve got four lovely images at the bottom of the page to sate your thirst for balls and mazes. Sad case…
