Wow! Another “coo-day-tah”!
Ace Combat 2 is the fully realised form of its predecessor, Air Combat. Whilst I acknowledge the integration of original sequences aimed at adding variety (escort missions, radar jamming, mandatory use of machine guns on certain targets, landing phases), it must be said that the core gameplay remains simplistic and repetitive. Once again, everything hinges on the peripheral elements, the presentation, the illusion of embodying a white-toothed ace pilot with large aviator glasses, chewing gum while striking a pose. And in this respect, it’s an absolute triumph.
The main improvement that stands out to me is the modelling of the cloud layer at high altitude, which I never tire of flying through in each mission. It serves no practical purpose, but the spectacle of soaring above the clouds at high speed, following a sudden change in lighting (especially when it’s raining below), makes it worthwhile every time.
Graphically, the environments are more detailed, and this isn’t merely pleasing to the eye but an incentive to play with geometry: weaving between skyscrapers, through the pillars of a suspension bridge… The missions are merely pretexts for engaging in all manner of aerial antics. It’s worth noting the inclusion of a replay function to admire your finest stunts.
Another notable point is the mission briefings, in quintessential ’90s style: a bright yellow arrow traverses a 3D map, accompanied by exuberant visual effects worthy of a television news opening sequence. Above it all, the instructor speaks to you in a Gigachad, with a thick American accent… No doubt about it, the presentation holds up firmly.
The game includes 30 missions in total (some hidden), 17 basic aircraft, followed by 7 special aircraft that are only accessible after completing the game once. There are also medals to collect by shooting down elite pilots, which provide further motivation to replay. Finally, the analogue stick is supported.
