The game based on the movie … and for once, it’s actually pretty good. You control Gomez, who must rescue his kidnapped family members. This sets the stage for a thorough exploration of the sprawling mansion and its surroundings, teeming with creepy critters … and stuffed with treasure.
The game’s two biggest strengths are its excellent controls (the use of a controller button for jumping is a big plus) and its non-linear design. There are plenty of areas to discover, connected by doors and underground passages (many of them cleverly hidden!). You can backtrack, tackle levels in the order you prefer, and your progress is saved via passwords (awarded after each boss).
That said, compared to the console versions (Super Nintendo and Sega Genesis), this one is missing background scenery, some sound effects, and even certain bonuses (a rushed port, perhaps?). Since I’m not biased… in the slightest, my preference goes to the Super Nintendo version.
