Playing as Rambo, lugging around an arsenal of big guns, grenades, bombs, and waging war all by yourself in a fairly realistic (i.e., ultra-violent) atmosphere. We dreamed of this kind of game, and curiously, there weren’t many like it!
Beneath its somewhat simplistic appearance, Fireforce offers a wide variety of equipment and decent controls, once you get the hang of the commands spread across the entire keyboard (this genre is better suited to consoles, with a controller).
You can take out your enemies in various, highly graphic ways, and loot the bodies of your victims as well as buildings to restock on ammunition. Complete your objectives, and you’ll be rewarded with different medals and promotions. The downside would be the overly strict time limit. I tried a trainer version with infinite time, but the mission doesn’t end, so not a great idea.
In short, it’s a modest game, but fairly well executed, requiring a bit of strategy and a lot of repetition. As long as it’s cathartic, I don’t see a problem.
It’s a shame, though, that there’s no two-player mode…
Its arcade ancestor is called Green Beret (Rush ‘n’ Attack in the US) (1985).
