This is a space opera (a sprawling sci-fi saga) built on a “pen-and-paper” RPG of the same name (think Dungeons & Dragons in space). You command a team of five adventurers in a richly detailed, open sci-fi universe. Like in Elite, you’re free to make a living however you see fit—by staying on the right side of the law … or not.
Of course, there’s a plot simmering in the background—some alien conspiracy aiming to overthrow the galactic empire. You might even get around to thwarting it, if you can spare the time between your main pursuits: hoarding cash, buying weapons, and gambling in casinos.
The character creation system is relatively complex. It goes beyond a stat-heavy character sheet, letting you craft a proper CV, complete with your faction, past experiences, and tailored skills. If that sounds like a chore (or if, like me, creating a save disk remains an unsolvable enigma), you can skip it entirely and play with pre-made characters instead…
