Shanghai is a “solitaire” variation of Mah-jong (Chinese dominos), somewhere between traditional solitaire (the card game) and memory. The rules are simple enough: you’ve got a pyramid of dominos to dismantle. Only dominos on the top layer and at the far left or right edges can be played, and they must be removed in identical pairs. There are two exceptions: the “seasons” and “flowers” dominos, which can be matched with any others from the same family.
