A basic first-person shooter, a bit dull compared to Doom, obviously.
However, considering what was available on the Amiga at the time, the execution seems fine to me. I quite like the bizarre design of the monsters and the eerie soundtrack (although discreet). Also, the intro music reminds me of the soundtrack of the movie Scanners. If that doesn’t set the mood for you, I don’t know what will!
The icing on the cake is that the game comes with a very well-made level editor and a save function (passwords for the CD32 version, which I wouldn’t recommend, by the way).
Now, time to talk about the things that get on your nerves!
First off, the control setup is problematic, especially when it comes to sidestepping. You can work around this on an emulator: in the “Input” tab, I’ve mapped the “Alt” keys to the arrow keys. This way, I can play with my mouse and keyboard like in modern games.
Yeah, I use the arrow keys…
Secondly, from level 2 onwards, you spend your time falling into pits full of lava, from which there’s no escape without losing a life. For this reason, I suggest skipping the “infinite health” mode…
Yeah, I use the cheat codes! What? You talkin’ to me?
One last complaint for the road: the weapon animations and the “special effects” really leave something to be desired. For example, I don’t recall seeing a single explosion. It’s pretty embarrassing when you’re carrying a bazooka!
