Alien Breed is a top-down action game that’s (far too) difficult. Dark environments, corridors teeming with monsters, and a constant ammo shortage combine to capture the atmosphere of the movie Aliens (even though it’s not an official adaptation!).
Key tip: press “Alt” to switch weapons.

An improved version was released the following year: Alien Breed: Special Edition 1992, featuring more levels, a password system (which was sorely lacking), and other enhancements…

Incidentally, the game is notorious for its vulgar cheat codes (which I won’t share here—you’ll have to look them up yourself).

I’ve found it has a modern-day successor: Alien Swarm (2010).
And, of course: Alien Breed Trilogy (2011).
