At first glance, this seems heavily inspired by Star Fox, aka Starwing (Super Nintendo, 1993)—or at least by level 1 of Star Fox. This impressive shooter focuses on the essentials: aerial dogfights with spacecraft. Offering more freedom to the player than its presumed inspiration (you move in 360° rather than along an invisible corridor), it has a distinctly different feel. I’d say it’s more intuitive and more straightforward, rewarding piloting skills over memorisation. Don’t expect the same variety or the epic scale celebrated on Nintendo’s console; think of Guardian instead as a no-frills arcade game where the goal is racking up points. In its category, it’s a success.
