MUDS stands for Mean Ugly Dirty Sport.

Take a rugby pitch. Dig a trench across the width, on each side, just before the goalposts. Fill them with water and throw in rabid sharks. Replace the goalposts with a basin and the oval ball with an obese, squealing bird (the flonk). Situate all this in a completely mad science fiction world, populated by different extraterrestrial races…

The game pits two teams of five against each other, and the goal is to throw the flonk into the opposing team’s basin to score points (or alternatively to smash the heads of the opposing players until they have no valid substitutes left). You have the choice of controlling a single player, or the one closest to the ball, or simply let the computer direct everyone while you focus on the role of “manager”, which is rather pragmatic, since all moves are permitted: fighting on and off the pitch, corruption, betting, buying players from the local slave market, etc.

Without rivalling Speedball 2 in terms of spectacle, MUDS enjoys an offbeat atmosphere and an interesting management touch.
