Here’s the conversion of a ridiculously cheesy arcade game (Taito, 1987), in the vein of Bubble Bobble. In fact, it was considered its sequel until the release of Bubble Symphony, aka Bubble Bobble 2 (arcade, 1994).

You control a little boy who can shoot rainbows and must climb vertically designed levels (one of which nods to Arkanoid) populated by nasty creatures—all while outrunning the rising tide.
The rainbow serves as both a formidable weapon and a handy tool for creating platforms to reach higher areas.

In 1990, Parasol Stars, the third instalment, came out, once again reimagining the gameplay mechanics.

And if you’re after a “retro-modern” take: check out Super Hiking League (2020).
