This shoot’em up was a big hit on the Atari ST, thanks to its relatively decent graphics and speed (or maybe just the lack of similar games back then?).

On the Amiga, for some reason, they decided to make it mouse-controlled instead of using a joystick. The result? Steering the ship becomes a complete nightmare.

It took me ages to figure out how to move to the next level. You have to destroy a certain quota of structures until the pink thing under the health bar disappears. After that, you’ll need to locate some kind of hangar and fly into it.

In theory, the ability to slow down, speed up, or even make a full 180-degree turn (bi-directional vertical scrolling) sounds brilliant. In practice, it’s incredibly clunky with the mouse—at least for the first few hours…

A sequel came out in 1988 (Goldrunner 2). It’s absolute rubbish!
And that’s my expert insight for today.
