I get the impression they put more effort into the description on the back of the box than in the actual game. It’s crazy; the manual even dedicates seven illustrated pages to the storyline!

In-game, the only thing worth remembering is the screen scrolling, alternating between horizontal and vertical, every other level, much like Salamander (arcade, 1986).

Phantom Fighter is very difficult due to the random movements of enemies, projectiles that are hard to distinguish from the background, and I suspect collision issues (especially against the boss in the fourth level; I don’t understand why my ship suddenly explodes in an open area).

The enemies all look the same, the weapons are dull, and some have annoying side effects (the homing missiles stop working in front of bosses, and the plasma shot reduces firing rate).
