Quiffy is the last survivor of the Blobbies—a race of adorable little blobs of goo on legs. After a sudden flood forces him out of his basement, he must make his way to the surface, picking up litter along the way because, well, cleaning up is important, kids.
Our slimy green friend can climb walls (and ceilings!) and comes equipped with an arsenal of quirky and over-the-top weapons for a “cute” platformer: grenades, flamethrowers, dynamite, shurikens, and boomerangs.
Quiffy’s odyssey spans 42 increasingly challenging levels (complete with a password system), packed with secret passages and hostile monsters. I have a soft spot for the horror-movie-worthy teddy bears (Psycho Teddies) sporting a gaping, toothy maw right in their bellies. Incidentally, they also eat rubbish, just like you—a useful detail for certain levels.
The final scene remains one of the most anticlimactic moments in video game history!
On the technical side, I’ve encountered a few odd bugs: trouble surfacing from underwater, or the screen randomly going completely black … though I’m not sure if that’s the game’s fault or the emulator’s. Oh, and a background texture wouldn’t have gone amiss.
And now … let’s play with the soundtrack:
- Does the intro music remind you of the Inspector Gadget theme?
- Do some of the sound effects seem borrowed from Lemmings, or the other way around?
- I’m sure I’ve heard those explosions in another Amiga game… The First Samurai, perhaps?
Finally, here’s its modern successor: Rain World (2017).
