Originally, Magic Pockets was developed for an English TV game show where kids tried to control the character via telephone to win prizes.
The intro music is lifted straight from a hit of the time: Doin’ The Do by British singer Betty Boo.
The family resemblance to Gods (from the same developers) is impossible to miss: familiar sound effects, a similar graphical style, and, unfortunately, the same sluggish movement.
While it does boast a few clever ideas, a cartoony aesthetic, and some amusing weapons, Gods had a certain character that Magic Pockets just doesn’t manage to capture. The sprawling levels, repetitiveness, and glaring lack of fluidity make it hard to muster much enthusiasm for this one.
