The story takes place in the 13th century, in England. Six lords are waging war for the crown. You are one of them…
In this medieval turn-based simulation, your duties include managing your lands (agriculture, livestock, trade, tax collection, suppressing revolts, witch-burning…), building a fortress (the editor lets you get as creative as you like), and, of course, raising an army, engaging in bloody campaigns, and besieging enemy castles. There’s also a bit of diplomacy in the form of more or less friendly letters exchanged with your neighbors. Only the battles occur in real time, though these tasks can be delegated to the computer. Overall, it’s relatively complex but well-presented.
Be warned: the sessions are lengthy and require some dedication (starting with reading the manual). Don’t expect to see any action right away, as your first actions mainly focus on establishing a healthy economy and securing your domain.
This game must be installed on the hard drive from Workbench, otherwise the constant disk swaps will drive you crazy. And, as usual, the French translation is dreadful.
Two sequels were released for PC (Lords of the Realm 2 in 1996 and Lords of the Realm 3 in 2004).
