Loki has returned … and so have you.

While the previous game had Heimdall leading a full crew, this time he’s joined by just one companion, Ursha the Valkyrie. The two characters can be controlled alternately, but there’s almost no interaction between them, leaving you wondering what the girl is there for—other than to lug your stuff. The concept of teamwork could have been explored far better, in the style of Head Over Heels, for example.

That said, I found Heimdall 2 more enjoyable than its predecessor. The inventory is straightforward, and battles take place directly within the environments instead of relying on a button-heavy interface. This makes the gameplay less disjointed and the action sequences less frustrating—though not necessarily more engaging. You’ll likely avoid most enemies anyway, especially as they constantly respawn.

The story is pleasant enough, helped by plentiful dialogue, cartoonish backdrops, and, mercifully, a lack of intrusive text windows asking questions like: “Do you want to open the chest you just clicked on?”, “Do you want to take the item inside the chest you just opened?”, “There’s a second item inside—do you want that too?” No, actually, I think I’ll leave the chest…

Heimdall 2 aims to be more user-friendly and dynamic. However, its RPG elements feel underdeveloped. While you can trade with merchants to upgrade gear and learn spells by combining runes, these features don’t feel particularly impactful, as the game focuses more on puzzle-solving.

I tried the CD32 version to avoid disk swapping but wasted more time setting up the controls. This version features in-game music of decent quality, but the endless loops quickly become grating. Plus, the lack of mouse support is noticeable. I wouldn’t recommend it. Ideally, install the Amiga version on a hard drive (WHDownLoad can help).
