Yet another generic shooter, but well-made, smooth, and easy to control.
My problem is that I tend to mistake enemy projectiles for bonuses. Thankfully, I also tend to miss the bonuses…
Beware, this is the kind of game where you lose all your upgrades every time you lose a life. It’s tough to recover from that! On the bright side, you’re not penalised if you collide with the environment (unless you let yourself get “crushed” by the screen scrolling— the camera really doesn’t like stragglers).
Notice that Tubular Worlds breaks a strange convention: in most top-down 2D spaceship games, the scenery scrolls vertically. Here, the top-down view is combined with horizontal scrolling. Can you think of any other examples, on Amiga or elsewhere?
If you want to try this game on an emulator, make sure to get the AGA version (256 colours instead of 64). The images come from this one.
