The Mega Man X series breathes new life into the saga by adopting revised mechanics (more dynamic, more combat-focused than platforming) and a darker tone.
The story takes place several years after the “classic” episodes, in a futuristic world where humans and machines coexist uneasily. Paradoxically, while humans occupy a central role, they are never seen (Dr. Cain remaining the only representative of our species known to the player). Thus, the games stage an internal struggle between two robot factions: on one side, the protectors of humans; on the other, those who have sworn to eliminate them to the last, in order to establish a society entirely populated and governed by machines.
