Lotus Turbo Challenge 2 is, in my opinion, just as good as those 3D simulations. The formula is simple: keep it to the point; go full throttle to reach the next checkpoint within the time limit. No downtime, no fuel management, no settings, no laps; just wacky tracks packed with traps (rocks, tree trunks in the middle of the road, oil puddles…). It’s exhilarating, it’s fast, and the victory is often decided by a split second. You love it and want more!
The game was ported to Sega Genesis in 1992 under the title Lotus Turbo Challenge (they skipped the first episode, which wasn’t a bad idea). The visual and especially the sound quality took a bit of a hit.
Later, a “washing powder” remake was released: Horizon Chase Turbo (2018). It depresses me to see such a product so devoid of personality. Oh wait, I should say “streamlined”. There’s also a certain Slipstream (2018) for those who are interested.
(*) The 3 or 4-player mode required two computers connected by a cable, and of course, two copies of the game.
