Disc features a kind of futuristic gladiator combat, one-on-one. The arenas are platforms suspended above the void, and the weapons are frisbees!
To win, you must injure your opponent or knock them off the platform by hitting them with your discs. Each player also wields a glowing shield, which can be used to deflect incoming projectiles, or even claim them as your own! This allows you to grab all the discs in play (up to four), bombard your defenceless opponent, and watch them leap around in a desperate attempt to avoid them. Inevitably, you’ll lose control of your discs, which will bounce back and hit you in the face…
To add a tactical dimension, the panels behind the players are marked with different symbols. Aim for them, and you’ll earn bonuses, or better yet, you might see a trapdoor open beneath your opponent’s feet! Matches often end on a precarious surface, reduced to a few isolated platforms, making movement and dodging increasingly dangerous.
Tournaments are possible, and there’s also a two-player mode, though it’s not very playable for the player at the back (who has no visibility of the panels behind the camera).
The inspiration comes from Discs of Tron (arcade, 1983), a game that itself was inspired by a scene from the movie Tron (1982).
In the same vein, I recommend WindJammers (arcade, 1994).
