Émulation:
Disclaimer: Following the legal actions brought by Nintendo against the biggest emulation sites, and considering the significant financial risk, do not be surprised to no longer see this manufacturer’s games freely available for download.
Planet Emulation
One of the oldest French-speaking sites dedicated to emulation (consoles, arcade and micro). You will find hundreds of thousands of ROMs, emulators, news, and probably always people of good will on the forums, if needed. You will not find: casino ads, ads in general… Surprising, isn’t it?
Emurom.net
Consoles games… Cough-cough!
The Old Computer
A great site to find rare games on old computers (Amiga, Atari, Commodore 64, among others)! The Amiga section also includes software, educational games, hundreds of Boulder Dash clones. Console and arcade games are also present, and in mass!
Games-Coffer
A slightly smaller selection of Amiga games to download, along with screenshots and instructions for setting up your emulator.
AMI Sector One
Shareware or public domain Amiga games (rare old crap).
Emerald Web
The largest collection of Boulder Dash variants for your Amiga emulator!
Internet Archive
If you’re looking for a particularly rare version of a game, this last option might work.
FS-UAE
The reference Amiga emulator, based on WinUAE.
DuckStation
PlayStation emulator.
SSF
Sega Saturn emulator.
PCSX2
PlayStation 2 emulator.
Abandonware and free games for PC and Mac:
Abandonware France
Formerly “Lost Treasures FR” (the site changed its name in 2009, I only realised in 2023). It is the French reference for abandonware (free downloads of old PC and Mac games with the aim of preserving cultural heritage). In principle, they have received permission from the rights holders (or these no longer exist).
GOG
A paid but relatively simple and safe solution (in terms of viruses and copyright infringements) to replay old PC titles. Note that they profit from certain games distributed for free by other sites (legally or not, it’s hard to know). In any case, I suggest waiting for sales.
RGB Classic Games
A large collection of old PC-DOS games, free or shareware.
XTC Abandonware
One of the largest abandonware sites. The casino ads don’t inspire much trust, but it seems to have a good reputation.
Retrospec
Amateur remakes of ’80s classics.
