Your mission is to rescue a princess held captive by an evil vizier. You start in the palace dungeons, unarmed … but some acrobatics will help you progress.
Prince of Persia revolutionised the platformer genre thanks to its handling. Using a simple joystick with a single button, you can walk, run, jump, grab ledges, and fight with a sword … all effortlessly and precisely. The character animation is also exceptional. Such a result was achieved by filming a model in motion and reproducing the frames, one by one. This well-crafted and innovative game paved the way for Flashback and Tomb Raider, among others.
Prince of Persia itself was probably influenced by Karateka (Apple II, 1984). Beware the ears!
